Dear Dr. Fox,
I am replying to your letter dated September 16, 2011 which I received via email from Ms. Julie Reiskin, Executive Director of the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition. I apologize for not responding sooner, but received your letter only a few days ago. Thank you for taking the time to bring your parents group concerns to our attention.
The parents' experience at the Prince Street and Arapahoe Road offices was clearly unsatisfactory. The poor customer service at these two offices was not within the standards expected at our 38 Colorado Department of Revenue's Division of Motor Vehicles driving license offices as well as the 18 county offices that operate under a memorandum of agreement with us. I will work with Ms. Nancy A. Doty, Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder, to ensure the offices, at 12600 E. Arapahoe Road and 5334 S. Prince Street, are compliant with the American Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitative Act of 1973.
In addition, we are already in the process of reviewing all driving license office policies and procedures. As part of this review, a common practice, conducted at most of our offices, to screen customers and expedite those with special needs, will be formalized to ensure it is a standard practice at all driving license offices across the State.
Further, we are developing an appointment program for our driving license offices to be fully implemented next year. In the interim, next month, we will implement an appointment system for parents or caregivers escorting disabled children.
Finally, one of the parents mentioned our website as being “user unfriendly'. I could not agree more. We are already in the initial stages of re-designing our website to be more customer-oriented. Due to fiscal limits, the pace of change will not be as fast as I would prefer, but it is one of my top priorities.
Thank you once again for sharing the concerns of some of the members of Parents of Adults with Disabilities in Colorado. We will use your group's experiences to help us improve customer service for all Colorado citizens.
Sincerely,
Mike Dixon
